Why Trying to Be Efficient Is Stealing Your Joy (A Mom’s Wake-Up Call)

January 28, 20263 min read

Have you ever been stuck in a hard moment—parenting, marriage, life—and assumed the solution was: “Just try harder.”

That belief has been my default programming for most of my life. And honestly? It’s something I’ve had to consciously unlearn as a mother.

Because here’s the truth I’ve learned the hard way:

Trying harder often pushes the very solution we want further out of reach.

And for moms—especially devoted, hardworking moms—trying harder is almost never the answer.

Why “Trying Harder” Backfires for Moms

Let’s be real: most mothers are already giving everything they have.

We’re not lacking effort.
We’re not lazy.
We’re not unwilling.

If anything, we’re over-efforting.

Yet when something isn’t working—our kids are melting down, a day falls apart, we feel disconnected or exhausted—we instinctively tighten our grip. We plan more. Control more. Push more.

But what if that pressure is the very thing making motherhood feel so heavy?

My Disneyland Wake-Up Call (When Letting Go Changed Everything)

This lesson hit me AGAIN in the most unexpected place: Disneyland.

I had a vision. A plan. A perfectly curated “magical day.”

And almost immediately… everything went sideways.

The schedule fell apart.
The timing didn’t work.
The joy I had imagined felt just out of reach.

I tried to fix it the only way I knew how: by pushing harder—trying to force the experience to match the picture in my head.

And it wasn’t until I completely resigned—gave up, surrendered—that something surprising happened.

The stress lifted.
The kids softened.
The magic appeared.

Not the magic I planned—but the kind that only shows up when you stop chasing it.

The Shift That Changed Everything: Presence Over Efficiency

Admittedly, there is a kind of joy and satisfaction that comes from executing a perfect plan. It can be one of the most rewarding experiences of motherhood.

But here’s what we often miss:

Chasing the perfect plan can quietly keep us from an even deeper satisfaction and joy—one that only comes from being present with what’s actually happening.

For me, it took EFFORT to focus less on efficiency—and more on allowing.

Less controlling.
Less managing.
Less forcing moments to mean something.

And when I did?

✨ I felt calmer in my body
✨ I actually enjoyed the day
✨ I discovered a joy and ease that comes from accepting the chaos

This wasn’t just a Disneyland lesson.
It was another motherhood lesson.

Why Efficiency Is Quietly Draining Mothers

Efficiency sounds virtuous. Responsible. Mature.

But when it becomes the lens through which we experience motherhood, it can quietly rob us of:

  • Connection

  • Spontaneity

  • Emotional safety

  • Joy

When we’re focused on getting through the day instead of being in it, our nervous systems stay in survival mode.

And kids feel that.

They don’t need us to be efficient.
They need us to be regulated, present, and human.

What Happens When You Let Go (Even a Little)

This shift—from effort to ease—doesn’t mean you stop caring.

It means you stop over-functioning.

When you let go of trying harder, you may notice you:

✅ Enjoy your kids without micromanaging
✅ Feel less overwhelmed by daily life
✅ Experience more joy in ordinary moments
✅ Feel more connected to yourself

Not because life became easier—but because you stopped fighting it.

Effortlessness Is Not Laziness—It’s Wisdom

After a lifetime of effort, life has gently (and sometimes not-so-gently) taught me another way.

A way rooted in trust.
In intuition.
In listening instead of forcing.

And it’s become my mission to help other busy, hardworking mothers experience this same ease—because if anyone deserves lightness, it’s us.

We are the ones holding families together.
We are the ones shaping the emotional future.
We are allowed to soften.
