Why I Stopped Making New Year’s Resolutions

December 31, 20253 min read

As the new year begins, I notice how quickly the pressure shows up.

New goals. New expectations. A quiet (or loud) belief that this is the year we finally get it right.

For years, I was very good at New Year’s resolutions. I set them faithfully. I tracked them carefully. And for a while, they motivated me.

But eventually, something shifted.

Instead of feeling inspired, I started to feel tired. Depleted. Like no matter how much I tried, I was always falling short. And as a busy mom, that constant self-evaluation only added more weight to an already full life.

So I stopped making New Year’s resolutions.

And what surprised me most?
I didn’t accomplish less—I actually felt better, more hopeful, and more at ease.

Today, I want to share what I do instead—three simple goal-setting shifts that have helped me create more progress with far less pressure.

A New Way to Set Goals as a Busy Mom (Without New Year’s Resolutions)

Before we talk about doing anything differently, I want to be clear:

There is nothing wrong with New Year’s Resolutions if they feel supportive to you. But for those of us for whom traditional goal-setting doesn’t work so well, you’re not alone.

Most moms don’t need more discipline—they need relief.

The following shifts are designed to support your nervous system, your energy, and your real life—not an idealized version of who you think you should be.

1. Measure Yourself Backwards

Most goal-setting asks us to look ahead at everything we haven’t done yet.

That alone can feel exhausting.

Instead, try measuring yourself backwards.

Look at how far you’ve come.
What have you learned this past year?
What challenges did you move through?
How have you grown, adapted, or softened?

This simple shift—focusing on progress instead of distance—can instantly change how you feel about yourself.

Confidence grows when we acknowledge the reality of our progress, not when we constantly chase improvement.

And I promise: there is always more progress there than we think.

2. Lighten the Pressure Instead of Adding More

As moms, our lives are already full.

So instead of asking, “What more can I do this year?”
Try asking, “Where can I ease up?”

What expectations could soften?
What pressure could be released?
What would it look like to do less—but with more presence and energy?

When we reduce internal pressure, motivation naturally returns.

Joy comes back.
Energy frees up.
And things get done—not because we’re forcing them, but because we finally have room to breathe.

3. Dream About What You’d Love to Receive

This is the most overlooked part of goal-setting—and often the most powerful.

Take time to dream.

What would you love to receive this year?
What would feel nourishing, supportive, or joyful?
What would simply be nice?

Write it down—not as a plan, but as an invitation.

There’s no need to figure out how it will happen.
No action steps required.
Just let yourself feel the joy of imagining it.

Then let it go.

You might be surprised how many of these things find their way to you—without effort, force, or control.

A Gentle Reminder as the Year Begins

This year doesn’t need to be about fixing yourself.

You don’t need rigid resolutions.
You don’t need more pressure.
You don’t need to prove anything.

What if this year was about supporting yourself instead?

Not pushing harder—but allowing more ease.
Not striving—but receiving.
Not measuring yourself against an ideal—but honoring the woman you already are.

You are enough, Mama.
And your inner wisdom already knows the way.
