We Hear the Warning. But Do We Share the Protection? Why the stories we repeat shape the way our children experience the world.

When a Neighborhood Text Opened My Eyes

A few weeks ago, a neighborhood warning text lit up my phone.

A mysterious white van had stopped near a home in our neighborhood where several children were outside playing.

The driver reportedly invited the children to get inside.

Thankfully, no one did.

The children were safe.

Parents were immediately notified, and before long the entire neighborhood knew what had happened.

I was incredibly grateful for the warning.

As parents, we absolutely want to know when something concerning happens close to home.

But over the next several days, I noticed something else happening.

The children were talking about it.

Parents were talking about it.

Fear spread almost more quickly than the text itself.

Suddenly every unfamiliar vehicle felt suspicious.

Kids who had always felt comfortable riding bikes around the neighborhood suddenly felt a little less safe.

And honestly...

That makes sense.

Our brains are designed to remember danger.

Then I Heard the Rest of the Story

A couple of weeks later, I happened to visit with the mother whose children had been there that day.

She shared details I hadn't yet heard.

Before the van ever arrived...

She had felt a quiet impression.

Nothing dramatic.

No obvious reason.

Just a simple feeling that she should bring her youngest children inside the house.

So she did.

Her older children stayed outside.

They were old enough to recognize the situation and knew exactly what to do.

They refused.

The van drove away.

Then something else happened.

One of the boys quietly suggested,

"Why don't we say a prayer?"

So they did.

They thanked God for protecting them.

As she told me this story, tears filled my eyes.

Because suddenly the story wasn't just about danger.

It was about guidance, protection, and unseen support that we can’t explain.

It was about children making wise choices.

It was about faith.

It was about angels quietly working long before anyone realized there was a problem.

And somehow...

That wasn't the story anyone was hearing.

We Naturally Spread Fear Faster Than Peace

No one knew that part of the story. No one was telling it.

As a result, no one received the hope, the peace, and the comfort that were just as much a part of what happened that day.

And I remember thinking, How sad!!!

Because this is the part of the story that has the power to lift our children—to help them feel confident, capable, and protected rather than fearful.

Instead, they were left with only the panic, the worry, and the threat.

The miracle barely spread at all.

Isn't that interesting?

We are quick to repeat stories that make us feel afraid.

But we rarely repeat the stories that remind us how supported we really are.

Our brains naturally pay attention to threats.

But if we're not careful, we begin to believe that danger is the whole story...

When in reality, protection is often unfolding at the very same time.

We Are Teaching Our Children More Than Safety

Please don't misunderstand me.

Children absolutely need to learn wisdom.

They should know how to respond to strangers.

They should understand healthy boundaries.

Warnings matter.

Preparation matters.

But there is a difference between preparing our children...

...and programming them to fear life itself.

If the only stories they hear are stories of danger, what conclusion will they eventually reach?

The world isn't safe.

I have to be afraid.

Something bad could happen at any moment, and I’m probably not strong enough to handle it.

But what if they also grew up hearing stories like this one?

Stories of quiet promptings.

Stories of answered prayers.

Stories of courage and protection.

Stories where wisdom and faith walked hand in hand.

Stories that help them feel more confident, more protected, and more safe.

Imagine how differently they would experience the world.

The Other Half of the Story Builds Resilience

Even though it doesn’t spread as quickly, the other half of the story matters more than we realize.

We don’t tell these stories to cover up or deny the danger.

We tell them because they remind us that danger is never the whole story.

There is another thread quietly weaving throughout our lives.

Guidance.

Wisdom.

Discernment.

Protection.

The still, small voice… our ‘inner pilot light.’

When we focus more on these stories of light, we raise children who don't merely know how to avoid danger…

They know how to trust the guidance available to them and build resilience to opposition.

And I don’t believe anything else has more value in our current world.

What Story Are You Repeating?

Which stories do we tell most often and share with others?

The alarming ones?

Or the hopeful ones?

The stories that increase fear?

Or the stories that increase faith?

Both may be true.

But one nourishes courage.

One reminds us that we are never walking through life alone.

And perhaps that's the story our children need to hear just as often.

Maybe even more often.

A Gentle Reminder for Moms

Yes, there are white vans.

There are difficult seasons.

There are frightening headlines.

Danger is real, and I don’t deny that.

However, I also don’t deny the potential power and resilience our children can have if we focus on the inspiring, reassuring half of the story.

We’re not always going to be there to protect them. So the best thing we can do for them now is prepare them with faith, confidence, and trust.

Because the truth is…

Life has a remarkable way of working alongside us.

And confidence is a much stronger foundation than fear.

So this week, I invite you to look for the other half of the story.

Not just the danger...

But the protection.

Not just the problem...

But the guidance that quietly met it.

Because those stories deserve to spread just as quickly.
