How I Learned to Trust Myself After a Cancer Diagnosis (4 Simple Steps for Moms)

April 08, 20265 min read

Have You Ever Felt Overwhelmed by a Big Decision?

Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed by a big decision—unsure of who to trust or what direction to take?

I know that feeling deeply.

This past year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
And as unexpected as it may sound… I saw it as an opportunity.

An opportunity to learn how to trust myself more fully than I ever had before.

Because when something big happens—especially around your health—suddenly there are so many voices.
So many opinions.
So many paths pulling you in different directions.

And it can feel incredibly confusing.

But what I’ve come to realize is this:

It doesn’t have to be.

Why Trusting Yourself Feels So Hard (Especially as a Mom)

Hi, I’m Krista, and here at Moms Simply Thriving, I help busy moms live with more ease and less effort.

And if you’re anything like me, one of the biggest blocks to trusting yourself might be this:

You’ve been taught to trust outside voices more than your own.

Experts.
Rules.
Authorities.

For a long time, I believed they must know better than I did.

So when I received my diagnosis, I knew I would be facing a lot of decisions—and I also knew this was my chance to do something different.

To go inward.
To listen more deeply.
To find answers that truly resonated
with me.

The Noise That Makes Decision-Making So Confusing

Like most people in my position, I started researching.

I looked into traditional treatments.
I explored alternative approaches.
I listened to success stories on both sides.

And honestly? There is so much hope and inspiration out there.

But what didn’t feel good was this:

The pressure.

The feeling that one way is right… and the other is wrong.
That you
have to choose a side.
That someone else knows what’s best for you.

And in all of that noise, it becomes really easy to lose yourself.

So I did something simple—but powerful.

I turned it all off.

The Moment I Came Back to Myself

I went for a walk.
Put in my headphones.
And just gave myself space to breathe.

To clear my head.
To reconnect.

And while I still didn’t have every answer about what my treatment would look like…
I had something even more important:

A deep sense of trust.

Trust that I would be guided to the path that was right for me.

It may not be the path someone else would choose.
And that’s okay.

Because this is my life.
My body.
My journey.

And I felt a deep conviction that the answers I truly needed were within me.
That my body understood what was happening… and what it needed to heal and recover.

So I chose to trust it.
To believe in it.
And to support it in whatever way felt right for me.

And one of the most powerful things my doctor said to me was this:

“We’ll give you all the recommendations—but ultimately, this is up to you.”

That stayed with me.

Because how often do we give away that power?

4 Simple Steps to Trust Yourself (Even in Big Decisions)

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or unsure, these four steps can help you reconnect with your intuition and move forward with more clarity and confidence.

1. Quiet the Noise

You cannot hear your inner voice when everything around you is loud.

Give yourself space.

Go for a walk.
Sit in silence.
Write in a journal.
Spend time in nature.

Whatever helps you slow down and breathe.

Clarity doesn’t come from more input—it comes from stillness after all the input.

2. Tune Into Your Body

Your body holds wisdom your mind can’t always access.

Instead of overthinking, ask yourself:

“What feels right?”

And sometimes, the best way to access that answer isn’t by forcing it…

But by relaxing into it.

Do something you enjoy.
Something that helps you feel calm and grounded.

Because when you feel good, your intuition flows more easily.

3. Trust Your Inner Knowing

This is where it all comes together.

Your body knows more than you think it does.

It knows what you need.
It knows what will support your healing.
It knows what direction is right for you.

Even when it doesn’t make logical sense.

Trust that inner knowing.

The more you listen, the stronger it becomes.

4. Let Go of Doubt and Comparison

Make a choice—and stand in it.

Doubt and comparison will only pull you out of alignment.

There is no “one right way” that applies to everyone.

What works for someone else may not work for you.

And that’s not a problem—it’s by design.

As Theodore Roosevelt said,
“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

Let others walk their path.
And give yourself full permission to walk yours.

You Are More Capable Than You Think

If you take anything from this, let it be this:

You are doing better than you think you are.

You don’t need to have all the answers right now.

You don’t need to figure everything out perfectly.

You just need to come back to yourself—and listen.
