The Real Reason You’re Exhausted as a Busy Mom (It’s Not Your Schedule)
Do You Ever Feel Exhausted Doing Something Simple?
Do you ever find yourself standing at the stove, making something simple—like a box of mac and cheese—and feeling completely drained?
That was me the other day.
It wasn’t complicated.
It wasn’t time-consuming.
But I felt overwhelmed… exhausted… and honestly, a little defeated just thinking about everything else I still had to do.
And in that moment, something finally clicked:
I wasn’t tired because I was making dinner.
I was tired because of HOW I was thinking while I was doing it.
The Hidden Reason Moms Feel So Exhausted
If you feel like you’re doing a hundred things at once—there’s a reason for it.
And it’s NOT your schedule.
There’s something deeper happening that most of us don’t even notice.
As I stood there stirring the pasta, my body was doing one simple task…
but my mind?
It was trying to do everything else at once:
Remember to call the dentist
Text that person back
Pay that bill
Invite my mom to my son’s piano recital
Physically, I was making mac and cheese.
Mentally, I was running a marathon.
And suddenly I could see:
THIS is precisely why we’re so tired.
The Mental Trap That’s Draining You
What I was experiencing is something I call mental layering.
It’s when we take a simple task—something that doesn’t require much thinking—and layer it with constant planning, worrying, remembering, and problem-solving.
We tell ourselves we’re being productive.
But in reality?
We’re just draining our energy.
Because here’s the truth:
You can only do one thing at a time.
And even more importantly…
Thinking about something doesn’t get it done.
But it does drain your energy—and keeps your mind from ever resting.
Why This Feels So Exhausting (Even When You’re Not Doing Much)
Here’s the irony:
These everyday tasks—making dinner, folding laundry, washing dishes—should actually give your mind a chance to recharge.
Your body is engaged…
but your mind could rest.
You could:
Listen to music or an audiobook
Connect with your children by listening to them or watching them
Watch a show that helps you unwind
Enjoy a quiet moment
Or simply be present
But most of us don’t.
Instead, we stay “on.”
We pride ourselves on multitasking.
We believe if we’re not thinking about everything now, something will fall through the cracks.
But let’s be honest…
Is it working?
Does thinking about everything all the time ensure you don’t forget?
Do you feel more in control?
Or more exhausted?
And furthermore…
Do you ever truly feel rested?
Or do you finally sit down… only to feel pulled toward the next thing?
The Truth About Why You Feel So Drained
At some point, many of us started believing:
If I don’t do it now—or at least think about it now—I’ll forget. I’ll drop the ball.
But here’s what’s actually happening:
We’re dropping balls because we’re trying to be “ON” all the time.
That constant mental pressure doesn’t make us more effective.
It just leaves us depleted.
And from that place of exhaustion… everything feels harder.
The 30-Second Shift That Changed Everything
In that moment at the stove, I caught myself.
And instead of continuing the mental spiral, I made a simple (but also difficult) choice:
I let it ALL go.
Not forever.
Just for that moment.
I mentally set everything aside (literally put it on the ‘back burner’)… and came back to what I was doing.
The sound of the water boiling.
The motion of stirring the pasta.
The simplicity of the task in front of me.
And something shifted.
My mind slowed, and I felt relief.
Not because my to-do list was done…
but because my mind finally had space to breathe.
What Happens When You Stop Mentally Layering
When you stop layering your thoughts on top of everything you do, something powerful happens.
Suddenly:
Making dinner feels calming instead of chaotic
Folding laundry feels peaceful instead of draining
Cleaning feels grounding instead of overwhelming
These moments become restorative instead of depleting.
And here’s the surprising part:
You don’t fall behind.
You actually:
Remember more
Feel more energized
Get more done
Because you’re no longer running on empty.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
So many moms are living in a constant state of mental exhaustion.
Not because there’s no end to the tasks…
But because there’s no end to the pressure.
The pressure to remember everything.
To stay on top of everything.
To never let anything slip.
So we push harder…
But we never actually recharge.
And over time, everything starts to break down. And before long, we’re not just trying to do it all—
We're trying to run a marathon on a dead battery.
Still expecting ourselves to hold it all together… and feel ‘fine.’
What If the Solution Isn’t Doing Less?
What if the solution isn’t about dropping the ball or needing to get less done…
What if it’s needing less from yourself while you’re already doing enough?
A Simple Shift to Try Today
The next time you’re doing something simple—making dinner, scrubbing the tub, vacuuming the floor—try this:
Just be there.
Let the thoughts go.
Trust that your to-do list will still be there later.
Let your mind rest while your body works.
Maybe turn on music.
Maybe notice the light coming through the window.
Maybe just breathe.
And see what happens.
You might find that what used to drain you…
actually starts to restore you.
A Gentle Reminder
You don’t need to earn rest by finishing everything first.
You can experience moments of restoration right in the middle of your life.
Right there at the stove.
Right there in the laundry room.
Right there in the ordinary moments you’ve been rushing through.
And when you do…
You may just find the energy you’ve been searching for was available all along.
